PRESS RELEASE * New Zealand Sikh Nagar Kirtan Disruption

Date: 23 December 2025

Peaceful Sikh Nagar Kirtan Threatened by Racist Hatred by Extremists

The Supreme Sikh Council UK strongly condemns the reprehensible display of religious and racial hatred exhibited by extremist elements during the recent Nagar Kirtan procession in Auckland, New Zealand. This peaceful procession, a cornerstone of Sikh tradition, celebrates unity and prayers for community wellbeing, transcending racial and faith boundaries.

We unequivocally denounce the aggressive disruptions witnessed, deeming them a gross affront to the values of harmony and coexistence. We urge local law enforcement and relevant authorities to take immediate action, ensuring those responsible are held accountable and advised against future transgressions, lest community cohesion be undermined.

Constructive dialogue is paramount. We advocate for facilitated discussions to address concerns and dispel misunderstandings, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

We extend gratitude to individuals and organisations condemning this hateful act, affirming solidarity with the Sikh community.

We express our deep appreciation to all individuals and organisations who have condemned this hateful act and stood in solidarity with the Sikh community.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to the Government of New Zealand, local authorities, and in particular the New Zealand Police, for their swift and professional response in maintaining law and order, safeguarding all participants, and upholding the principles of a pluralistic and inclusive society.
